About

Aron in Edmonton for 7PLEX in 2008Aron Burrell is a Network Administrator (read: Jack-Of-All-Trades IT Guy) for Cansel Survey Equipment in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  He doesn’t normally speak in third-person, however he sees it as an appropriate point of view for an ‘About’ page.

Aron hasn’t always been a Network Administrator.  He has worked in retail at Grand & Toy and Black’s Photography, studied Linguistics at Mount Royal College and the University of Calgary, and put in time at varied other odd jobs as situationally required.

For recreation, Aron hasn’t been very consistent, but has studied martial arts in past as a member of the Alberta Kung-fu Association and is currently a member of both Swing Dance Calgary and U of C Swing learning to dance Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Balboa.

Aron started using computers in 1984 at the age of 3 when his mother purchased him a Texas Instruments 99/4A personal computer.  He began programming TI Basic at 6 years old when he told his mother he had become bored with the computer and she responded by handing him a stack of programming manuals.

Aron has had an Internet presence since sometime during the 1993-1994 school year where at John Ware Junior High under the tutelage of his computer teacher, Philip Stobo, he first accessed the internet via a shell account and Gopher.  Subsequently, he would go on to assist in networking the library and classrooms, setting up the school’s BBS (including Fidonet mail, Internet email and telnet shell), and co-authoring the school’s first official webpage with Jeremy Nickurak.

Aron is a computer gamer, though not among the hardcore elite.  Lately, he has been playing a great deal of Dragon Age and before that, Fallout 3. He will be starting on Mass Effect 2 soon.

The arts have always meandered in and out of Aron’s life.  In junior high school he played clarinet and alto saxophone.  In high school, he stopped playing woodwinds and pursued acting and singing, taking musical theatre classes, attending private voice lessons, competing in the Kiwanis Festival, and spending time in the Academy of Music Performance at Mount Royal College. As mentioned above, swing dancing is a more recent activity and Aron has also acquired a clarinet so he can learn to play once more once time and ambition permit.
