Yeah, because the West didn’t care before? Who’s the West, you mean the politicians? They don’t care about anything, they just grub for votes. You must mean either “the people,” who I think have been demonstratably concerned with the third world for some time, or with the media, who care for nothing but pushing their own agenda.
I mean, yeah, “caring about the third world” is a good thing, but who, precisely, hasn’t been caring? Who are you complaining about?
I’m not so sure that enough people in the West have been demonstrably concened to generalize to the entire population, but you’re right, my statement is over-broad. I don’t have the answers, of course. It’s more of an observation, really. Unfortunate also, that I predict this will be treated by the media as the big tradgedy of the moment and will be all but forgotten by the end of 2005.
Yeah, the only reason no one forgot the terrorist attacks is because they happened on US soil. I mean, no one remembered the bombing of the USS Cole after a year.
woo, and I spell rel good. =p
Very true.
And I think your perception of people not caring is because the media never treats it usefully. The third world receives plenty of private aid, but they keep having these wars and despots, which really block any useful aid from coming through. The third world continues to suffer because of poor government, not a lack of assistance from other countries- on which they shouldn’t have to depend anyway.
