Rogers Mandatory Update Debacle

Here’s the scoop broken down into detail as much as possible for those who may not be in the loop.
Android and HTC Phones
Before I get into the details, it helps to know some things about the above phones. First, these are both Android phones. Android is a phone operating system that was released over a year ago by Google. The HTC Dream (aka: the G1) was the first Android phone released in October of 2008. Since that time Android has been updated constantly and new versions of the operating system have been released with new features and bugfixes. The HTC Magic (aka: Sapphire/MyTouch) was the second phone released (in April of 2009). That phone was released with Android 1.5 (cupcake) on T-Mobile in the US. In May, the T-Mobile G1 (HTC Dream) was given an update to Android 1.5 as well.
Rogers didn’t carry either of these phones until June, 2009. Prior to Rogers carrying these phones there had already begun to be a large ‘modding’ community whose purpose was generally to modify existing firmware to operate better, allow more user control, and fix bugs in the operating system that were being neglected by carriers. When Rogers brought Android phones to its network, it was only natural that the modding popularity would spread up North. One popular modification is CyanogenMod which is currently based on Android 1.6 (Donut). In spite of the fact that T-Mobile in the US has already distributed Android 1.6 for their G1 and myTouch phones, HTC and Rogers made a joint statement that the Dream and Magic would not be getting 1.6 upgrades.
This left many Rogers Dream and Magic users installing 3rd party modifications (including CyanogenMod) in order to gain the Android 1.6 experience their providers refused to give them. The tradeoff? No operating system support from Rogers. This can be likened somewhat to Jailbreaking and modifying an iPhone.
The 911 Issue
On January 15 of this year, I (and many other users of the Dream and Magic phones) received a text message from Rogers. It read as follows:
Rogers/Fido service message: URGENT 911 Calls: Please disable GPS location on your HTC Dream device to ensure all 911 calls complete. HTC is urgently working on a software upgrade and we will provide details shortly so you can re-enable GPS. Instructions: Select Menu – Select Settings – Select Location – Uncheck Enable GPS Satellite
This is, indeed, an urgent bug. The real surprise was that neither Rogers nor HTC had fixed it yet considering it had been fixed 4 months prior in the Android Open Source Project. The fix was submitted on September 17, 2009:
author Mike Lockwood <nobody@android.com> Thu, 17 Sep 2009 14:29:17 +0000 (07:29 -0700) committer The Android Open Source Project <initial -contribution@android.com> Thu, 17 Sep 2009 14:29:17 +0000 (07:29 -0700) ... AI 151388: Fix null pointer exceptions that can occur if the GPS is started due to E911
From there, the patch would be in every subsequent version of Android. Immediately after entering Android Open Source, the patch was incorporated into CyanogenMod and other mods.
In fact, this was one of the important fixes discussed by T-Mobile in their press release for 1.6 back in October [emphasis added]:
The rollout of Android 1.6 (Donut) to T-Mobile’s G1 and myTouch 3G customers is now underway, and provides new features and software enhancements. The update also includes an important fix for isolated instances of system reboots after dialing 911. We have worked with Google and HTC on a solution, and the rollout of Android 1.6 is being accelerated to ensure the system reboot fix is rapidly delivered to our customers.
The update was released by HTC as an over-the-air update. Users received notification that there was an update on their phones and had a choice whether or not to install.
This is pretty damning evidence that Rogers has been out of touch not only with the Android community, but other vendors as well. I’m inclined to say that HTC dropped the ball on this one too since they were clearly aware of the issue at the time of T-Mobile’s 1.6 update.
Okay, so large fault on their parts, but fortunately it didn’t affect me or any of the other individuals who had already upgraded our phones to 1.6 or higher firmware by way of mods. Clearly Rogers needed to take action to help those of their users who were still on stock Android 1.5.
The Great Disconnect
The evening of Friday, January 22, many of the users of Rogers Dream and Magic devices (though not all users) received a text message similar to the following:
Rogers/Fido Safety Message: URGENT 911 Calls HTC Dream software update: Mandatory software update is now available to help ensure 911 calls are completed from your phone. Please go immediately to rogers.com/dreamsoftwareupdate on your PC to download. In order to help ensure 911 calls are completed internet access will be temporarily disabled on your phone at 01/24/10 6:00AM EST. To minimize loss of internet service, please complete your software update immediately. Upon completion, internet access will be re enabled within 24 hours. For users of Macintosh and Windows 7, please call 1-888-764-3771(1-888-ROGERS1) for update instructions. We apologize for the inconvenience but we prioritize customer safety above all.
In short, internet access was to be disabled for all users of HTC Magic and Dream unless an update was completed 24 hours prior to 6AM Sunday morning, January 24. The ‘update’ was a 1.5 firmware with the following main modifications:
- The requisite 911 fix.
- ‘Fixes’ to the kernel to prevent exploits from functioning (the kind of ‘exploits’ used to allow modders to gain “root” and install their own mods)
- A new radio and recovery image that continue (in the same vein as the original firmware) to prevent modders from flashing new versions of Android onto the phone.
- SenseUI, an “improvement” by HTC on the Android interface. There is some contention over whether or not it is actually an improvement, and many prefer the simplicity of the original Android interface.
In short, while providing a much belated and important fix along with some interface changes to those on their stock firmware, Rogers is imposing a downgrade (and preventing re-modding) upon those of us who do not have the 911 issue and do not want or desire HTC Sense UI (some users already have Sense UI through other 3rd party modifications).
Of course, come Sunday morning those of us who had not installed the Rogers Mandatory Update or CursorSense 1.2 (a mod based on the Mandatory Update) were left without data access on our phones.
The most official reason for the forced disconnect comes from @RogersMary:
You’re right that disabling GPS fixes the issue and allows 911 calls to complete. So does disabling data.
While it’s understandable that Rogers did have an obligation to take action and a responsibility to its customers, what’s not clear is why those of us with a fixed version of Android are being subjected to the same treatment. If Rogers has the ability to detect out-of-date firmware on their network, it should be equally easy to detect more recent firmware and exempt it from disconnection.
In response to my assertion that all 1.6 firmwares were safe and that CyanogenMod had this fix already, I was told by @RogersMary,
Hi Aron. I can’t offer assistance on rooted devices. For customer safety, all customers need the 1.5 fix downloaded to device.
I can accept that no assistance or support would be granted to someone using a non-standard version of Android, however I was not asking for support any more than I asked to have my data connection disabled. The only thing being asked for is the data service that is already being paid for.
To be fair, in an extended version of the announcement, Rogers has stated that they will be offering one month of data service in compensation for the outage, but again there is no provision for those of us who do not require the update to have working 911 service. Compensation is not service.
Reconnection
There are still many questions regarding the disconnection and reconnection process. Callers to technical support have gotten mixed answers as to whether they can have their connections reactivated while using non-standard firmware or if a reinstated connection will last. It seems not every support agent is even familiar with the situation.
What is clear is that this can legally be no more than a temporary measure. As Ben Selinger put it in his blog post yesterday,
Some of you may recall legal precedence for this kind of issue, dating waaay back to the 70’s when Bell (then Northern Telecom) tried to force its customers to use Bell branded phones, and tried to attach a special fee to modem/fax use. The courts ruled against Bell, and the CRTC jumped in and made all sorts of rules to prevent telecom’s from requiring proprietary hardware, on standardized networks. This does, legally, carry over to GSM carriers. GSM is GSM. If your phone supports GSM on the frequency of a carrier, the carrier must provide a signal. Period.
Rogers would face an uphill battle trying to maintain their hard-line against those who refuse to upgrade and there is already talk in the community of presenting a case to the CRTC.
Additional Updates
- 2010-01-26 @ 12:02 PM – Additional downsides to the Rogers Mandatory Update
-
- SenseUI apparently drains the (already poor) battery on an HTC Dream at a higher rate than the stock firmware does.
- Voice dialing not functional for some people after updating. This makes it illegal in some provinces to make phone calls while driving using these phones. Hat tip to @IWMOPS and @gervai5
- Multiple reports of Fido customers having to enable Roaming Mode in order to have access to data after performing the update.
- 2010-01-26 1:53PM – Free Magic deal called off due to 911 fix?
-
It seems the Free HTC Magic deal that was available for a limited time to Dream owners has been called off for dubious reasons. The deal was originally offered by Rogers as a good faith gesture to Dream owners who were disappointed that their devices did not have enough storage space for the Android 2.1 update Rogers was planning for eventual release. This announcement was made no later than January 9.
We had heard a few days ago that this deal was on pause until the 911 issues were worked out on both the HTC Dream and Magic, which have both been pulled from shelves, but now it seems Rogers is claiming that the deal only existed due to the 911 issue. Remember from my post above that the text message sent out regarding the 911 issue was on January 15, 6 days later!
Via Tyrell’s comments below come some excerpts from Rogers support emails,
I am pleased to inform you that the issue with the HTC Dream has been resolved; as such, the promotional offer for an upgrade to the HTC Magic is no longer available.
Thank you for your most recent email. I have contacted our technical department and they have advised that in the beginning the 911 issue was only affecting customer with the HTC Dream. However, within hours we received confirmation from HTC that this issue was also affecting the HTC Magic. Once it was brought to our attention that this issue was affecting both devices the promotion was placed on hold until further notice.
So, which is it Rogers? If the promotion only existed because of 911 problems then why didn’t we hear about the problem sooner?
- 2010-01-26 4:17 PM – More confirmation of the cancelled Magic upgrade
-
From this comment by Lee:
I called into Rogers and asked the CSR about the Dream to Magic upgrade, and was told they are no longer offering it since the mandatory software update fixes the problems the Dream had.
Edit: From Calvin’s comment below it would seem that the confusion over the Dream to Magic upgrade pause is simply misinformed support staff and that the deal will resume when the 911 issue is resolved.
- 2010-01-26 4:20 PM – Additional problems with the mandatory update
-
Looks like more problems with the new firmware have been observed including:
- Fido customers report their phones now constantly say they are roaming (data I believe)
- Some people report various FCs and spontaneous reboots
- One person says he was unable to delete icons from the home screen (including Rogers icons)… has anyone else encountered this?
- Photo gallery error (GBD)
- Task manager “end all” causes FCs (GBD)
- Possible problem with MS Exchange (via Twitter)
- Twitter user XBrav is having problems with freezing, buzzing, and calls not completing.
- Flash player not always working
- Battery possibly draining faster
- Some apps previously available in the marketplace are now not available.More information on I Want My One Point Six.
- 2010-01-27 12:51 PM – Magic upgrade plan just delayed
- Tweet from @RogersMary in response to @bcrook88, confirming the purpose of the upgrade and that it’s just on hold:
The upgrade is just temporarily on hold. It was set up for Dream customers who wanted a new OS. Hope that helps.
- 2010-01-28 7:29 PM – Not much has changed
- Things still appear to be the same as a couple of days ago, though I hear via rumour that the support tickets are piling up at Rogers. A couple of nights ago the issue was featured on Slashdot which sent a lot of hits this way and hopefully increased public awareness of the issue.
In general, Rogers is still telling callers that the update is required and as many tell it, they’ve stopped issuing network resets/refreshes when asked as well.

Surprise, surprise. Don’t suppose you have a mirror for the Dream version as well?
Man… I am so glad I’m not a customer of the big red machine… although I do have to deal with the unfriendly “future” that telus provides.
So, even having modded 1.6 firmware, Rogers isn’t reconnecting data?
No Rogers firmware, no data connection. That was the info I got from Rogers when I called several times, eventually being transferred to Liz at “The Office of the President”, whatever that is. My experience with Rogers was great until this weekend, now they just don’t want to listen to common sense but prefer to give canned response. Despite the fact that the 911 bug was discovered months ago, and a fix released months ago, and I fixed the bug myself by installing a custom rom, Rogers seemed in a panic to fix this and in their panic they made many customers unhappy.
I totally understand your frustration, I had a smooth 1.6 cyanogen mod running on my Dream, had to unroot, downgrade to 1.5, patch, and now I’m stuck with the Rogers stock OS (which has been force closing a LOT, not to mention the horrible Rogers apps. Sure I’d live to buy a ringtone despite the fact I can set any mp3 to a ringtone FOR FREE!). Many apps (improved maps w/streetview & layers, voice input, goggles, etc.) don’t work with 1.5 so I’m stuck with a phone does much less than it did last week.
I love Android, but when people ask me if they should get an android device for themselves, I’ll have to tell them it’s way too much trouble, especially if Rogers is the carrier.
Grrrr.
Egg: Depends on who you talk to as to whether it can be done at all, but the official word is no. For my part data is back on mostly because I lucked out in talking to the right person, but many people have been told that Rogers will be disconnecting people without the right version repeatedly, so who knows how long it’ll last.
Tyrell: Pain in the ass. I’m sticking it out on 3rd party firmware to see how far I can take it. I’m told the ‘goldcard’ method might work to get you back to a ROM you like, but it’s best to wait it out for 2 weeks in case further disconnects are issued.
Hope you don’t mind my reposting this around a bit.
Glad to hear you seem to be back onto data. If they really try to screw you on it, I would if that would be grounds for escaping a contract early. (Specifically, do the terms of the contract mention software modifications at all?)
Really looking forward to seeing what Wind Mobile does in Canada once the dust settles. They’re hitting some startup troubles, but it sounds like things are getting better fast.
Just wanted to mention: Your RSS export to LJ for this post breaks spectacularly due to an unrecognized tag.
Jeremy: Not at all, go ahead. As for the contract terms, I doubt anything is mentioned about software modifications considering third party phones from anywhere on earth are allowed on their network.
Dan: Fixed! Thanks much for the heads up. Forgot a couple of unescaped < and > characters.
An additional item for those trying to stick with CyanogenMod on Rogers is to try installing Brian Crook’s build.prop fix which mangles the version numbers to match Rogers. We still don’t know if they can see these in CyanogenMod or even what mechanism in Android provides them with the build number, but there’s potential for it to help.
Skullnerd: Telus and Rogers… on a bad to less-bad scale, I think Telus might actually be winning lately.
Oh, btw, Rogers is using this 911 fix as an excuse to get out of the free Dream -> Magic update. Which, in my mind, are two separate issues.
Consider the following:
1. Rogers offers to upgrade Dream to Magic for free so Dream customers can experience the “Full Android Experience”, since they’re capping the Dream at 1.5. No mention of upgrading to get rid of a bug, only to provide the user with a better experience. Pretty cool move, if you ask me, especially since you get to keep the Dream as a backup. Free upgrade promotion was supposed to end today, Jan 26.
Then,
2. Rogers demands you patch their version of 1.5 so get rid of the 911 bug.
Now, must understand that this bug has been documented and fixed since September 2009. T-mobile actually moved up their scheduled release of 1.6 to address this, and T-mobile customers started getting OTA updates in October 2009. Many Rogers customers had 1.6 (or later) roms which contain this fix.
Rogers, on the other hand, are acting like this bug is something completely new and unexpected, and now claim the original “giveaway” of the Magics was only to address the 911 bug (which, remember, was known months ago to most everyone in the android community), and when they “realized” the bug was affecting Magics (only after the promotion had begun, according to them), they discontinued giveaway. I have e-mails from Rogers explaining this explicitly, and I’m in the process of dealing with them about this.
First of all, they knew about the bugs with Dreams and Magics. Second of all, if the purpose of the promotion was a safety issue (911 bug), why didn’t they mention it and instead passed it off as generosity?
I don’t know, maybe this is off topic, but the 911-patch and data outage are a convenient excuse to end an unrelated promotion. Why not let me have the Magic and let me patch it, like I did with the Dream? Wouldn’t I be getting a better experience without any safety issues?
Anyways, what gets me is the blatant lying on their part, didn’t mean for this to turn into a b!tchy rant.
Tyrell: If you’re correct, that’s quite a serious problem of chronology on their part:
- January 9 (At the latest): Rogers makes a statement that they will be allowing free upgrades to the HTC Magic for Dream users on account of a lack of storage space on the Dream.
- January 15: Rogers acknowledges 911 issue.
If they’ve now retracted the deal stating that the deal was only present because of the 911 issue, they have some explaining to do.
Do you have an official statement recorded or posted somewhere from them stating the reason for the retraction of the deal?
Well, Litui, I’ve got proof, here’s an excerpt from their e-mail response when I asked for clarification about the Magic giveaway:
“I am pleased to inform you that the issue with the HTC Dream has been resolved; as such, the promotional offer for an upgrade to the HTC Magic is no longer available.”
When I replied to this, asking specific questions (the reason for a giveaway, as I understood it, was initially to provide a better android experience, not to fix a bug, see my earlier post), I received this e-mail.
“Thank you for your most recent email. I have contacted our technical department and they have advised that in the beginning the 911 issue was only affecting customer with the HTC Dream. However, within hours we received confirmation from HTC that this issue was also affecting the HTC Magic. Once it was brought to our attention that this issue was affecting both devices the promotion was placed on hold until further notice.”
Rogers is re-writing history for their benefit. That, or they’re just incompetent. Take your pick.
That’s ridiculous. The promotion had nothing to do with 911, and if they’ve changed their tune now then they have to account for why customers didn’t hear about the 911 issue sooner. Crazy. Going to update the post to reflect this new info, thanks.
I just got off the phone with Rogers tech support and they said that there was no way they could help me if I was unwilling to install the update. I asked for a network reset and they assured me that I had to install the patch if I ever wanted to get my data conection back. They assured me that 911 would not work with my GPS on and it was a safty issue so they could not help me.
I’m heading to the Rogers store and pester some people in person.
4r4nd0mninj4: Sorry to hear that. Looks like that’s the canned response still for most people calling in.
[...] This post was mentioned on Twitter by Andrew Paulin, Aron Burrell, Jodie, islandlinux, gehrehmee and others. gehrehmee said: #rogers wants to control what you do with your phone. @windmobile looks better and better. http://www.litui.net/archives/796 [...]
After getting told my a Rogers rep that told me the free hardware upgrade had ended I told him to transfer me to someone higher up. I got on the line with his manager who assured me that the upgrade was not canceled but only put on hold while they get phones in stock with the 911 bug already fixed. She also said she would personally call me when they become available and place the order then.
If nothing else this whole situation has clearly demonstrated how poor internal communication is at Rogers.
Calvin: Thanks for the info. Agreed on the left hand at Rogers not knowing what the right hand is doing.
Unexpected consequence of the mandatory update to my HTC Dream is that the resident Alarm Clock app no longer wakes up the phone to ring. Pretty useless now as an alarm clock. Rogers spent an hour on live chat trying to comprehend this, got nowhere.
I will add 1 more to what Calvin said, Rogers cx relations team is advising that it is because they have no HTC Magic “in stock” and this is why the promotion is not currently active. I requested arbitration and was advised that I will get a call back from them once they get more “in stock”.
Is the mandatory update is supposed to give the sense ui to the dream? I updated when all I thought it did was fix 911 issue, and my ui is still the same.
For Cyanogenmod Dream users who haven’t put in the Rogers fix yet, and kept their EBI1 radio (RADIO-3.22.20.17) – I’ve made a post over at xda: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5480955&postcount=416.
I’m confirming the excellent work by ezterry from another post in the forum. Updated a modified rogers rom which leaves your SPL alone, restored cyanogen, waited half a day for a scan to take place and then did a battery and sim pull, and my 3G is back with no need to call Rogers for a refresh.
Thanks for posting that Bruce. I caught ezterry’s original post today but didn’t have time to go over it. Looks good.
If Rogers decides to re-deactivate me, I might give that a try.
My wife has been affected by this issue as well. She performed the update on her Dream (hers is still a stock Dream, no rooting) and had data restored within a couple days. Today the phone slipped into an endless loop of reboots. Techs eventually determined that “her SIM card was damaged”. After paying $45 up front for a new card (with a promise that our account will see a $45 credit), the phone worked fine… until tonight, when it slipped into another cycle of reboots. Guess the issue wasn’t the SIM card after all.
So glad our contracts are up this April.
I have 3G back! I was poking about last night and I found someone who had loaded a new ROM from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=592856 and I can say that it worked for me. (Magic 32A only from what I see) I also posted a short bit on my home page so I don’t have to repost information as it develops. Hope it helps
4r4nd0mninj4: Awesome! Glad CursorSense did the trick. Now we just need a solid, repeatable solution for the Dream…
Another huge downside of doing this upgrade is the phone can’t be access by adb or ddms. This means no screenshots, no debugging etc.
This is another valid reason for breaking your contract and returning the phone without penalties, which is what I’ll attempt next.
So I didn’t perform the upgrade. I’m running CyanogenMod and I refuse to “upgrade” to 1.5. Aaaanyway, I was lucky and called in early and asked for a network refresh. I called regular customer support (not smartphone support) and asked for the network refresh. They (Rogers) still have my old Blackberry on file. They don’t even know that I bought a Dream off another Rogers customer.
However, even with working data I still get 2 automated phone calls and 2 text messages EVERY DAY telling me to perform the upgrade. So I called tech support and told them “Hey, I have a dream and I did the upgrade but I’m still getting your messages. Please make them stop.” So he called me back on my home phone so I could check my build numbers on the cellphone. In the end he couldn’t help me and the call ended.
THEN… I get another automated call from Rogers on my home phone. It’s a survey asking me how my call went. I agree to participate. Thing is, the stupid automated survey makes you listen to the “1 for very satisfied, 2 for sort of satisfied, 3 for not satisfied, etc…” FOR EVERY SINGLE question. Hitting 1 or 2 doesn’t do anything until the automatic voice is done her whole sentence.
So I got fed up and hug up the phone mid-survey. Then you know what happend? I get ANOTHER automated call from Rogers. Dammit, all I wanted was for Rogers to leave me the hell alone. Is that too much to ask?
Dear Rogers, STOP CALLING ME! stop txt’ing me. JUST GO AWAY and let me ride out the final year of my contract in peace. And you had better believe that now that you’re not the only GSM compatible 3G carrier in town that this will indeed be my last year with you!
I too am running CyanogenMod. I refused to “upgrade” and was getting texts and automated calls all the time (twice a day).
I have now updated my RADIO only (see this: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Upgrade_Rogers_Dream_Radio) and will report back if I get more calls and texts from them.
I have to add, prior to updating my radio, I had called Rogers, and coerced the tech (pleading, pleading, then yelling, yelling) in doing the network refresh (it worked). Incredible thing is, I am a Fido customer, and Fido knew nothing of this. ..
Well, after the radio update, I got one more SMS and that was it. Not been bugged by their stupid ‘campaign’ since.
Rob: Thank goodness. I just updated the Dream’s radio today, myself, when upgrading to the latest CM. We’ll see if they keep pestering me now.
[...] might give insight as to why Rogers decided to disable data in late January for HTC Dream and Magic users before their deadline came up, and why they have become increasingly [...]
When I hurd about the upgrade from the Dream to the Magic I almost shit myself. A free phone for an extra 3 months on my contract sounded great. I checked on my rogers account and sure enough in upgrade phone option I can upgrade or rather “upgrade” to an HTC Magic. No cost. No admin fees. Sweet.
Check the mail in a few days and I got a ticket in the mail to pick up my phone. I got a SIM card in the mail. I applied for the upgrade on the 19th. I guess the upgrade was put on hold on the 20th so when my order came up they sent me a SIM card. I contacted rogers support by phone and after waiting on hold and stuff the conclusion was that they couldn’t offer me a Magic because they didn’t have any available because they were put on hold. I tried emailing them and was told to send the SIM card back to them with a note saying I got sent the wrong product. I am not sure if this will work. I kind of feel stupid for even mailing the SIM card back because now I have no evidence they sent it at all but I did copy some numbers off the order sheet and the tracking number for ups.
I think my next move is to ask for a LG Eve. I’m sure this phone does not have any of the issues the HTC phones do.
@Dennis
Speaking from experience, the LG Eve has its own troubles. It’s also on Android 1.5 and has two major issues that come to mind:
1) Occasionally, seemingly for no reason it will not come out of standby. It will have to be hard-rebooted with a battery removal.
2) Occasionally, also for seemingly no reason it will forget it has an SD card and the card will have to be removed and re-inserted to work.
That said, LG has committed to a 1.6 upgrade for Spring sometime. Hopefully it fixes the bugs. Otherwise, a nice phone!
I have had no text messages or calls from Rogers since I “downgraded” to CursorSense, and I have had no issues with making calls with my Magic. I do notice that it says I am on 2G a lot more than I used to be on CyanogenMOD and the USB tethering doesn’t work. By the looks of things with Rogers, I guess I won’t be returning to CyanogenMOD any time soon.
4r4nd0mninj4: Actually, I haven’t heard of anyone losing their connection yet if they switch back to CyanogenMod (downgrading radios again) after running CursorSense to get their connection back. No saying if they’ll change that though. You may still get your calls “forwarded” temporarily whether or not you are on CursorSense. Seems to be happening regardless of whether you have data or not.
If you go to http://www.rogers.com/HTCwaiver, you will be able to enter your informations about your phone and re-activate your internet and voice line. I don’t know if it works but i’m doing it. It’s a manager of the President helpdesk that told me that !!!
I give it a shot. Please comment if it works for you.
Joniel: That appears to be exactly what so many of us have been waiting for. Hopefully it works!
Sorry to say it won’t work for me. As I posted on my site, I get \Please enter a valid serial number\ I have called Rogers and they confirm that my IMEI number is registered to my account. I have a ticket for this and I’ll let you know how it turns out.
@4r4nd0mninj4 Since friday, the IMEI issue seem to be resolved. I was able to enter my IMEI number and form accept. And after 36 hours, I have my data back. It sould work for you by now.
No dice. I even tried it with IE and it still won’t work for me. Switched from CurseSence to Cyanogen on the 10th and I have not had any issues with my data or phone service since.
Scratch that. I just checked my phone and my zombie 3G has been double tapped. So now I am again without data (no time to load the other rom), and with that 911 waver broken, who knows how long until I get my data back.
[...] Rogers Mandatory Update Debacle [...]
I hope my nightmare with HTC Dream is over. I got my new HTC magic few days ago and it seems to work better. But when I opened the box, I learned that my contract was renewed for 3 years. The guy on the tech support line told me the phone was totally free and it would cost me nothing to try the phone. Check my blog for a list of all the problems I got with the HTC Dream: http://stephanehamel.blogspot.com/2010/02/androids-difficult-start-in-canada.html
I got my free Magic today.. I was told from day one, and also read online that there was a contract extension for the promo.. another 6 months is nothing for me considering I’ve been a 10yr customer..
(not holding my breath.. hehe)
I’m satisfied with the Magic so far and I plan on keeping this phone legit, and hoping for the roger’s 2.1 android release that I’ve read so much about
I’ll keep using my Dream for as long as I can thou… Go OpenEclair!!! 2.1 on my Dream..
Joniel, you’re my saviour. i had stubbornly refused to upgrade after seeing what my spouse went through with it. today i decided to look whether there was now a way around rogers’ forced crapgrade, and the waiver fits me just fine. the page worked for me, accepted my data, and told me my connection should be back within 24 hours. i’ll report back.
this whole page is very informative, thank you as well, litui.
update: worked alright for me. they said it would take 24 hours. nothing happened. i went into mobile network settings, and toggled “use only 3G networks on and off”, and *boom* there was my 3G connection.

Rogers always try to control how the phones work to the detriment of users. I have a Nokia N95 8GB – very nice phone, but it is still at the original Rogers proprietary v.11 software version while Nokia has upgraded many times and is now at v.30. This means all Rodgers N95 customers are missing out on all the Nokia software improvements. Reason? I suspect Rogers don’t want to spend money on software updates and rather sell you a new phone. So why would Rodgers even bother to have their own software version? The modications they did on the N95 was mostly to sell their own services and data plan (which I had to disable as it connected by itself several times and Rogers sent me a large bill for the priviledge).
I also have an issue with them on promised phone service which they never honoured despite acknowledging they made the offers. I have it all documented and will go to small claims to force compliance. I suggest the same approach for HTC issues. Having to defend themselves over and over again will be expensive and time consuming for them.
